But if you consider that people in a democratic society, hencetoforth implying a belief in democracy have commited crimes just as, if not more so, heinous, you realize that anyone is capable of horrible crimes. A famous senator killed a woman, supposedly on accident. He is still a senator. Sure, we have our bad apples, but no society or group has a perfect record. And untrustworthy doesn't make any sense? What are they being/not being trusted with? At least you can see the code they write to make sure that you aren't being tricked into installing malicious software. Microsoft installs spyware on purpose. That seems more untrustworthy than any open source project could ever be.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Genuine_Advantage

But I guess that's the beauty of the internet. W...

Yasith needs to create a new blog from this one. We haven't had any writings in a while. But let's just break down what we have.

True, Linux is not structured THE SAME as Windows and Mac are in their development. When you come to think about it, though, this really creates a more rich line of software.

Open Source code is great for the masses because you have the most amount of people contributing to the development of that application. They realized very early on that they needed a way to keep a centralized tracking system of changes to the software. Hence, such tools as RCS (Revision Control System). Even Microsoft has a revision control system. But consider that Microsoft has limitations based on how many people they hire. Open Source has no such limitations because everyone that has a computer on planet earth (or beyond, if they know how to talk to our computers) could potentially write code to submit to open source projects. With billions of computers out there, imagine the possibility.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revision_control

The same argument goes for Apple developers. Why do you think that Apple has a portion of some of their applications as open source?

http://developer.apple.com/opensource/index.html

If you use Wiki, you have used a RCS. (See link above)

How is this not structured?

Now, as for marketing, you are 80% correct. There are lots of companies that sell GNU/Linux products. More specifically, they sell a pre-packaged distribution that also gives support to that customer. You have your choice of Red Hat, SuSE, Xandros and PCLinuxOS, to name a few.

These companies may also package non-free (not open source) software, or software with a license incompatible with the open source ideal.

Red Hat has to market themselves. SuSE (made by Novell) has to market themselves. Etcetera. So, decentralized marketing does happen. GNU/Linux, as a whole, could not be peddled because that money would have to be distributed to many people throughout the globe that have contributed to what we consider to be GNU/Linux today. Linus Torvalds, the creator of the GNU/Linux kernel, is not the only person who writes code for the kernel. Many people have helped throughout the years. But all of the distributed kernels have been checked and revised by many people. Many people have put code into it. But Linus Torvalds is the ultimate decision maker on what is added to the kernel. How is that not structured?

And, by the way, thank you for sharing your opinion and noting that it is an opinion, not fact.

I don't think that anyone can claim to have accurate data on install numbers, but you are right that GNU/Linux is not the leader. It has been in third for a while. It will, sadly, probably continue to be in third place for a very long time because of people claiming that it is difficult to install and use, etc., etc. This, in my experience, has tended to be because people haven't actually tried to install and use it.

For a personal story, I made my wife install Fedora on her laptop, and she kicked and screamed the whole way. Just the other day, she says to me, "I can't believe how fast Linux is compared to Windows when I'm starting up my computer." And she never has any real problems with anything but SELinux. But even lots of smart GNU/Linux users don't understand enough about SELinux, which is why many people disable it.

Anyway, the point of the matter is that people don't give it a fair chance. They think that they have to be a geek to use it and know all of this command line stuff. That's just not true anymore. And people tend to forget that Windows even started with a command line.

Now, if I can stay on topic for a minute and a half, I'll tell you that when I set up Fedora or Ubuntu, I never saw the command line. All I had to do was click the "Next" button and type in my name. It really is that simple.

With Windows, you have to install Windows, then get the drivers, make sure the drivers are signed, rummage through install CD's until you find it, and get really upset that it doesn't "just work." Then, you have to install all of the extra programs with all of the CD's that make it operational. Windows doesn't come with Office. GNU/Linux does come with OpenOffice. It also comes with many other little things that Windows users just have to install from elsewhere. That includes antivirus software and the risk you take in operating a Windows system without antivirus software.

And here's a question for applerocks; Why does Mac hold so small a market share in the server realm? Even Apple themselves host their sites more on GNU/Linux or FreeBSD.
Note that this was news 4 years ago.

http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2004/12/07/mac_enthusiast_sites_hosted_on_linux_freebsd.html

On top of that, even Netcraft doesn't show one Mac server on their graph from July's checks.

http://uptime.netcraft.com/perf/reports/performance/Hosters?tn=july_2008

So, I guess that while individuals are still trying to get rid of the blue screen of death, companies who rely on their servers to be working all of the time seem to have figured out that GNU/Linux is doing the good job they need.

By the way, I prefer my IRiver PMP-120 so much to the IPOD. And it is GNU/Linux based. I have the source code to it and will be changing some of the features it has. Can you do that with your IPOD?

 Hello darkness, my old friend,
Ive come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

Thanks for your time,

Jacob

me so loves linux :pIt reflects my persona :) I ha...

me so loves linux :p

It reflects my persona :) I have customized it to my liking.

And yeah am no more a software pirate.

but don't show Pi off in public places. ;-)

but don't show Pi off in public places. ;-)

Dumbass, OSX has way more marketing structure than...

Dumbass, OSX has way more marketing structure than Linux.
